Who is this course for?

The course is designed for pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation professionals who use English in safety-critical communication. It is particularly suitable for participants who want to improve the clarity, accuracy and effectiveness of their spoken English while becoming more familiar with the language areas considered within the ICAO framework.

A pre-course needs analysis identifies the participant's role, communication context and priorities so that scenarios and feedback can be tailored appropriately.

What will participants develop?

The course is practical and communication-led. It is not a general English course with aviation vocabulary added. Participants work with the communication behaviours that protect shared meaning.

  1. listen for purpose, action and critical detail;
  2. produce clear, concise and intelligible work-related English;
  3. protect letters, numbers, callsigns and other high-impact information;
  4. signal uncertainty and request precise clarification or confirmation;
  5. repair one incorrect detail without restarting the complete exchange;
  6. explain non-routine situations through clear situation, impact, need and next-step messages;
  7. maintain manageable pace, fluency and comprehension when workload or message density increases;
  8. and review communication evidence and identify a useful next development focus.

The ICAO language lens

Participants become familiar with the six ICAO language proficiency descriptor areas: Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension and Interactions, and use them as a practical lens for communication practice and reflection.

IMPORTANT The course uses the ICAO language framework to support development and familiarisation. It does not award, predict or replace an authorised ICAO language proficiency assessment.

How the training works

Each day contains four focused 45-minute lessons. Participants work through realistic listening, speaking and interaction tasks, moving from supported practice towards more independent performance. Daily workbooks, the Participant Quick Reference, the Post-Course Independent Development Pack and structured trainer feedback help participants record evidence and apply one improvement at a time.

Scenarios are adapted to the participant's professional context while keeping the distinction between language training and operational instruction clear.
