Cribs Exhibition (16th December 2013)

The Malta Tourism Authority is once again organising the Cribs Exhibition at the Auberge d’Italie, Merchants Street, Valletta.

There will be a number of cribs and a variety of artistic objects on display related to the Nativity theme. As in the past editions of the exhibition, some of the items on display will come across as a surprise, since the works of arts will have been created using unusual materials. and extraordinary creativity.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 16 December to 5 January (except the following dates: 25 December and 1 January).

Opening hours for visitors are as follows:
Monday to Friday: 09:00 - 18:00
Saturday: 09:00 – 16:00
Sundays: 09:00 – 13:00

On Wednesday 24th December and Wednesday 31st December the exhibition will be open as from 09:00 until 13.00.

The tradition of crib making in Malta dates back to the early 17th Century when merchants and nobles used to buy Nativity Scenes from Naples or Sicily. The cribs produced today in Malta are varied and made up of a combination of material, whether papier-mâché, polystherene, rocks, wood etc. Some cribs have mechanised figurines. The main theme surrounding the nativity scene is typically daily rural life. Several craftsmen exhibit cribs in their own homes. Some even convert their garage or sitting room into an enormous crib that fills the room for the admiration of invited guests.
